Software Engineer Intern

A summer where you'll learn more than you expected.

Big tech internships are great for the resume. But at a lot of them, you're one of hundreds of interns, working on a slice of a slice of a product, with limited visibility into how decisions actually get made.

Unthread is different. We're a lean team of 8 building AI-powered support infrastructure used by teams at Spotify, HubSpot, and Lemonade. As an intern here, you'll ship features that real customers use, sit in on customer calls, have 1:1s with our CEO and CTO, and get a genuine window into what it looks like to build and grow a software company.

If you're weighing offers and wondering what you'll actually walk away knowing, this is the internship that answers that question differently. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to chat with you!

What We're Building

Support is broken. Internal teams like IT, HR, and Operations are drowning in Slack messages with no good way to manage them. Unthread fixes that. We started out by deeply integrating with Slack but have branched out to other enterprise messaging platforms. By using agentic AI to resolve tickets end-to-end, teams can focus on problems that actually need a human brain.

You'd be joining at a moment where there's tons of interesting work to do, and the things you build will reach real users.

What You'll Actually Do

You'll be treated like a junior member of the team from the jump. You’ll own features, make decisions, and ask questions when stuck (which is encouraged, not frowned upon). Here's a taste of what a week might look like:

Monday: you're in standup with the team, picking up a ticket to improve how Unthread surfaces AI-suggested replies in Slack. By Thursday, you've shipped a working version. On Friday, a customer uses it.

More specifically, you'll:

  • Take ownership of full-stack features from design to deployment, with support from the team along the way

  • Work directly with the CTO and senior engineers, joining architectural conversations where your perspective is welcome and valuable

  • Build on top of our Slack integration and AI infrastructure, getting a first-hand look at how production AI systems actually work

  • Participate in code review, giving and receiving feedback in a low-pressure, collaborative way

What the 12 Weeks Look Like

Here's what's built into the program:

Support structure

You'll have three people in your corner from day one: a primary mentor for day-to-day guidance, a project sponsor to help with ownership and scope, and a buddy for the social and cultural side of things. You'll have a weekly 30-minute 1:1 with your mentor and join a weekly team-wide retro to reflect on your progress.

Leadership access

You'll get dedicated 1:1 time with both our CEO and CTO. You'll also sit in on live customer calls to gain insight on how deals happen, with prep and debrief included so you get the full context.

Startup fundamentals

A series of informal lunchtime conversations covering the things most engineering programs never teach: how the company makes money, what fundraising actually looks like, how we prioritize engineering work, how we ship and measure impact, and an open career Q&A focused on what matters early in a startup career. We’re a small team coming from a lot of different backgrounds and diverse interests.

Weekly Lunch & Learn

Every week, a rotating deep-dive on something cool and useful: codebase architecture, debugging in production, testing strategy, using LLMs effectively (prompts, evals, guardrails), and product thinking for engineers.

Monthly State of the Union

A full business and product update from leadership, open to the whole team, with an open Q&A.

Who We're Looking For

We care more about curiosity and drive than credentials. Here's what tends to make someone a great fit:

  • You're a rising senior studying Computer Science or a related field

  • You're comfortable with JavaScript or TypeScript, or you've built enough in other languages that you can get up to speed quickly

  • You've built something before: a side project, a hackathon submission, an open-source contribution. Anything you're proud of and can talk through

  • You like asking questions and don't hesitate to flag when something isn't clicking

  • You find AI genuinely interesting and have thought about what it might actually be useful for

Bonus points if you've:

  • Built anything on top of Slack's API or worked with real-time messaging systems

  • Deployed something to GCP or worked with Postgres in a real project

  • Played around with LLM integrations or agentic workflows

What It's Like to Work Here

We're a small, collaborative team where good ideas matter more than seniority. Our founders are both technical and hands-on. You'll work alongside them and the rest of the engineering team.

We have real conversations about tradeoffs, change our minds when someone makes a good point, and don't get precious about decisions once they're made. There isn't a lot of red tape, just a shared interest in building something good together.

We're excited to invest in interns who want to learn and contribute. If you're curious, communicative, and enjoy the feeling of shipping something useful, you'll have a great time here.

Our Tech Stack

  • Node.js and TypeScript for backend and full-stack development

  • GCP for infrastructure

  • Postgres as our primary database

The Details

  • Duration: Summer 2026 (flexible on exact dates, 12 weeks)

  • Location: Hybrid — in-person during the week in our NoMad office, Fridays remote

  • Compensation: Competitive hourly pay (we'll talk numbers early, no surprises)

  • Eligibility: Rising seniors only

How to Apply

Send us a link to something you've built: a GitHub repo, a deployed project, a writeup, anything that gives us a sense of how you think and what you enjoy building. A cover letter is optional, but if you do write one, feel free to keep it casual: just tell us a bit about yourself and what sounds interesting about Unthread.

We try to move quickly on applications and will keep you in the loop throughout.
